Ice time is incredibly expensive... I know because I write the checks for my sons association. It's $400 per hour for us... so $33 for 5 mins which is probably how much time it takes away. It's not about being unpatriotic, and everything about reducing costs of a very expensive sport.
So what, 2 to 3 minutes? Sounds like hatred of country more than cost of ice time. If ice time is so expensive for schools then either eliminate ice hockey from area high school sports or charge more for fees for students and ticket prices to the game. Plenty of schools don't have an ice hockey program. To use the cost for two to three minutes to play the national anthem is a cop-out for their hatred of the country.

Why do we play the national anthem before sporting events anyway? I have attended spelling bees and debates and they don't play the anthem prior to those events, why the anthem is necessary at a high school sports competition is beyond me.
It never made sense to me at the professional level either. The worst is NASCAR, not only do you have to listen to them play the national anthem, but you are forced to listen to a Christian prayer before each race as well.
