Are you sure? Maybe they resigned because the US government can no longer afford to buy them off.
Pretty run of the mill in a parliamentary democracy really. When a ruling coalition no longer has a majority they can either try to forum a minority government (if they can get enough outside MPs to give them a vote of confidence) or they can step down and let all parties see if they can negotiate a new coalition government.
