Word is that by the end of the decade production of $1 bills will stop and they will be replaced by coins. Should Obama be on these new coins? After all, being the first African-American President his historical significance is on par with Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. Thoughts?

No President should be on those coins. They should return to a standing or seated liberty as per the custom on US coinage prior to the current Presidential run of coins.

Traditionally the US has minted $1 coins with a female on them, not a male. Maybe we should have a series of $1 coins with historically significant females like Susan B. Anthony (already on a coin), Martha Washington, Betsey Ross, etc.

I think it would be more fitting to put his face on Monopoly money.

Not in this political environment....Republicans would then demand Ronald Reagan be put on the $20 bill and we'd have gridlock in Congress for at least five election cycles over the idea. Not that I think Obama is deserving to be on US money...
If they're going to keep Washington on the quarter, they shouldn't have anyone on the dollar coin. Use an eagle, or the Statue of Liberty, instead.

That would be a trade I would accept. Obama on the $1 coin for Reagan on the $20. Jackson was one of the worst Presidents in our country's history anyways and does not deserve to be on the $20.

Agree, Jackson was despicable, and Teddy Roosevelt would be a better fit. I don't see what Reagan or Obama have done to deserve being on US money.

Roosevelt has very little significance anymore. Quite aside from personally being anti-Obama I think it's too early to be memorializing a sitting President, irrespective of what claim to fame he has. We should let history decide. Rushmore is an example of what not to do - putting Roosevelt up there with icons of history before letting history judge whether he merited a place there. Reagan is another example, mocked unmercifully by the liberals of his time as a senile fool, but looming ever larger in history as even liberals today recognize his place in ending the Cold War. If Obama's legacy works out we can always memorialize him later but if comes to be remembered as the President who gave up the Middle East to terrorists, trampled Americans' freedoms, and spent the country into the ground then we are going to look just as foolish hailing him as a hero as the Rushmore folks do today putting up some barely remembered buffoon alongside the father of our country.

I think you're mixing up your Roosevelts.

Reagan ended the cold war and brought in the greatest economic expansion in US history. The America we know today is largely attributed to Reagan's policies. He was also one of the most loved Presidents in history. He is definitely worthy of being on a denomination of currency.
