I've paid over a hundred thousand in SS and Medicare taxes. I have a minimum of 35 more years of paying into those programs until I'm eligible, so I will have no problem saying that I've earned those entitlements when I use them. God forbid I ever need unemployment insurance, or food stamps, or medicaid I've paid into those programs as well.
For those that have not paid into the system, I think it's a hard case to make that they have 'earned' their benefits. It comes down to a question of whether or not we, as a country, want to provide that social safetynet, and how we do that efficiently.
Where I live, things like section 8 housing and TANF benefits are viewed as a way of life, and communities have come to depend on them across multiple generations.
I personally think we should provide a safetynet, and think they should be there as a hand-up to get back on your feet, but I get very frustrated that some people look at the programs as a subsidy to a lifestyle they never intend to change.

By sitting on your butt, I guess. The fatter your butt, the more you get.
That and the more babies with dead beat sperm donors that you produce. You can be a single parent, work full time, educate, discipline and raise responsible, respectful children. I know, because I've done it and so have some of my friends.
Apparently some folks still don't understand the definition of entitlement or the between and entitlement program and those are that needs based.
When you have that kind of ignorance how can anyone expect their to be a political compromise or any solutions whatsoever for any problem.
An entitlement program is a program that is available to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria. That includes needs-based programs like TANF, SNAP and Supplemental Security Income.
