Liberal here and I can't say I would be gutted if movie makers started to make films with a plot rather than filling it with mindless violence and explosions....
Same with video games. I don't think those are directly responsible for murders and crime but they most certainly desensitise some people and make violence seem glamourous and exciting rather than what it is. Sickening and dangerous. Making something abnormal seem fun and somehow thrilling is not my idea of moral and responsible behaviour. But then again the industry is all about bums on seats and whatever makes them the most money. Capitalism at its most basic and shallow...
I would rather watch a film with a decent script and talented actors than the crap the mainstream film industry comes up with....Hollywood tends to scrape the bottom of the barrel IMO. So this liberal would not be offended if a little more intelligence came into the movie industry...
Hmm, interesting. Personally, I'm all for an overhaul of the ratings system. Violence is okay, but sex or smoking a ciggie will get you an R. It would be more useful to me as a parent to know which movies are more violent than others.
I would entertain a discussion on either revamping ratings or maybe making violent movies less accessible for younger kids, either by a surtax as you put it or another method.
The main problem I can see with that though is by making it more taboo, you'll only encourage kids to want to get their hands on it more.
I think parents need to be vigilant about what their kids are watching, which is really the only way to police it. I also tend to think most kids can distinguish between fantasy and reality, but I'm certainly going to check it out further.
