They are not FORCED to do anything. They could cut welfare entitlements but apparently are prepared to throw retirees under the bus before welfare recipients.
The money could be found easily in the defense budget. No need to cut meager welfare benefits.

Hell, tell the Brotherhood to fund their own army and we've got an immediate $2-3 billion.
And that is just one small minute line item.
Imagine if they asked "Does this benefit the American people who WE represent" against each line item ?
Heck, we'd end up with a surplus if that really happened.

I agree with that. In fact, the impact from SS is pittance. But, may be this is more about SS and its direction over next two decades than about deficits? You will likely say that... so what, we can work to increase SS revenue... but how do you plan on getting it done?
It is easy to cheer from the sidelines to someone who is speaking what you want to hear. Getting it done, is a different game, and largely a political one.

How does that math work? Can I see how you calculated?
"If the chained CPI had been in place all along, today an 88-year-old who'd started drawing benefits at age 62 would receive 7.32 percent less in benefits this year, according to the group."
Rest assured knowing the ultra rich in this country will not be forced to purchase less luxury goods because you bent over and will be taking a 7% cut in SS benefits, rather them them paying slight higher tax rates. Suckers.
Are you telling me that I will have to take a cut in my Social Securithy when just last week I got the same thing that all the rest of the old people got that shows a 1.7% increase as a COLA? I guess that the Obama administration is lying to us about this, too.

Who are you talking to? I knew this was coming long before the election? I started threads on this topic several years ago. I knew it was coming .
I'm fine here guy. Living in Southlake Tx, with high income, multiple investment accounts, and debt free.
I'm just watching this 30 year old, slow motion car wreck take place, while idiotic, low paid whites tell me they need their SS benefits cut by 7% because we all need "austerity"......
"Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona joins us to discuss his opposition to President Obama’s offer to cut more from Social Security than from the military in the ongoing negotiations over avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff. Obama has offered to cut some $100 billion from military spending, but even more from Social Security: $130 billion by adjusting the inflation index for Social Security benefits. Grijalva says Obama’s proposal opens the door "for some long-term damage down the road."

That's not a cut. That's a hypothetical "what if" modeling of what would have happened over a 26 year period had this change been made in 1986.
But guess what? It wasn't made in 1986.

Too blunt is not your problem. Then again, taken in another way, maybe it is.
