Out of a short list of 5 individuals, President Barack Obama was chosen as TIME's Person of the Year for a second time, the other being 2008, after his first election to the Presidency. The publications heralds Obama as "the architect of the new America" and highlights his historic win this year against strong headwinds as an example of his power, foresight and symbolism in a changing nation.
What do yall think? Is it well deserved? Keep in mind that you don't have to disagree if you dislike him. TIME doesn't choose on the basis of widespread acclaim or goodwill towards someone, it's based on influence. For instance, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, and Ayatollah Khomeini have all been the Person of the Year. (And I don't mean to make a sinister comparison between Obama and Hitler, just proving a point)
George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman and Franklin Roosevelt were also chosen multiple times.

TIME magazine says he got the award because he was able to win the election even when most people (including TIME) thought he wouldn't. And they go on to say he did it mostly be concentrating his efforts on people who weren't political, and who didn't really know what the issues were or what his record was.
TIME says he was able to engender more of a feeling of comfort, or trust, than Romney was. And so he won the election by persuading people who didn't know much about him or Romney, that he was the better shot for the next four years.
Basically, TIME says that Obama won because Josef Goebbels was right: The "Big Lie" technique worked for him.
And for that, he deserves "Person of the Year".
I wonder: If Romney had won the same election, would TIME be naming Romney "Person of the Year" today?
