Just wanted to post this simple description for those who may completely mis-understand the modern rifle: The so-called Assault Rifle (PS: My great-great-great-great gram-pappy used an assault rifle in the American Civil War! A single-shot ball loaded muzzle loader. Horrors!
He used it, with it's bayonet, to Assault other people.
Not for anything, but isn't 'assault rifle' normally considered a specific term for a magazine-fed, select-fire weapon firing a rifle cartridge or an intermediate one? Stg 44, AK-47, H&K G3, FN FAL, that sort of deal?
(Not to be confused with assault weapon, which is a legal definition, of course.)
It's not the right forum, but I will comment anyway. The term comes from "assault tactics," or as the Brits termed them "infiltration tactics," which had their genesis in WWI.
This led to the replacement of high-powered, long range rifle fire with intermediate-powered rifles. It's really a misnomer to refer to "assault rifles" outside of a military context. That won't stop an ignorant main stream media from doing so, of course.

Pretty much. Assault rifles are basically rifles with automatic capability

G3 and FN FAL are not assault rifles because the cartridge used (.308) is too powerful. Assault rilfles are those rifles particularly suited for assault (or 'infiltration') tactics. Ths involves concentration of force and massed firepower, including full auto fire. A rifle like the G3 using a full-power rifle cartridge had too much recoil too be used in full-auto by most users, although such rifles sometimes were made with a selector switch allowing full-auto fire.
"Assault weapon" is a term made up by gun control advocates for PR purposes. It was never used by gun manufacturers.

Interestingly, I think that's specific to English, possibly even US English. German, for instance, doesn't distinguish between the G3 and the G33, they're both a "Sturmgewehr". And yes, the G3 comes default with a full-auto option - I carried (and carried and carried...) one.

Negative, Ghostrider. The M16A4 is an assault rifle, yet has no automatic capability (single shot and 3-round burst only). It is however magazine fed and is capable of semi-automatic fire, that is what makes it an assault rifle as it lacks automatic capablitiy.
Anthony G. Williams, the current co-editor of Jane's Ammunition Handbook, tells us that he uses the following definition for assault rifle: "A military rifle, capable of controlled, fully-automatic fire from the shoulder, with an effective range of at least 300 metres."....
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) defines assault rifles as follows:[indent]Rifles capable of single shot or automatic fire using a short cartridge providing accurate fire and more controllable recoil force than a standard rifle cartridge. By reducing the cartridge case and propellant, the cartridges weigh less and soldiers can carry more. These shorter rifles were developed in response to the recognition that most fire-fights take place at ranges under 400 [meters]. The small size of the assault rifle and its ability to fire at up to 800 rounds per minute has led to it being adopted by various forces as a replacement for the submachine gun.
