If you search the relevant literature you will find more critical critiques of John Lott and Gary Kleck's (the authors that your refer to without citing than their is research supporting their positions.
My favorite part was the number who reportedly responded to the Lott/Kleck phone survery that they had used a gun in self-defence in the past year and then how that number was extrapolated into the general population.
