As someone with a special needs kid in thier lives, it suddenly struck me that this was one of the many words NOT banned around here.

Why is that acceptable?

Discuss.

In that case, why is ***** filtered?

*The censored word means "female dog"

edit: or *****? (Qu**r) - It has fully acceptable uses (plus I know many gay people who use self-identify using that term).

Retard is a perfectly acceptable word. it's in the dictionary and everything.

"It's now very common to hear someone say "I'm rather offended by that." as if it gives them certain rights; it's actually nothing more...it's simply a whine. It's no more than a whine. "I find that offensive", It has no special meaning. It has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. "I'm offended by that." Well, so the @#^& what?"

Other than the fact that few use it in that context, I have no idea.

I have no idea why it is acceptable but I think it is incredible telling that the first people to insult others with that word usually spell it "retarT". Ironic don't you think?

It's done with automatic filtering software, and the specific words are decided upon by administration (not the mods - admin). There are many words "banned" (filtered) on this site, including the few examples given above, and anything that is an obvious curse word.

As for this particular term, I too find it very offensive... considering my connections with the Special Olympics, which span 3-4 decades now, I just know how hurtful it is to people with intellectual disabilities. And like "lkb" said above, it seems those who use it in an insulting manner are usually stupid with no medical excuse. I mean, it doesn't take an intellectual giant to come up with something better.

Now in the real world, I don't think ANY words should be "banned" - but we're on a privately-owned website here, so they have every right to filter anything they deem inappropriate. If you (OP) have an issue with this, I would suggest mentioning it to one of the admins; I have done this with another word, and it was filtered shortly after my request.
