The USPS churned out one billion stamps of "The Simpsons," Fox's iconic animated family that has been gracing the television for nearly 25 years, in 2009. The problem is, according to the USPS inspector general's report, only 318 million were sold, resulting in a $1.2 million waste in printing costs.
The report illustrated a trend of stamp overproduction that is plaguing an agency with significant financial problems. The inspector general said the USPS could save $2 million a year by ending overproduction of commemorative stamps.
It's just so easy for the government to spend money that's not their own.
Going back to an August story to try to make a point?
They'll sell eventually.
I didn't even know that they made Simpson stamps.
Now that I do, I'll buy some.
You must realize the Krugmanites do no believe there is such a thing as 'wasted' spending. Every dollar spent into existence will end up going through a multitude of transactions, some productive, some not. A bit like when a robber mugs you, he isnt harming the overall economy, merely re-allocating capital.
They really are un-reconstructed, 1930s, "pay a man to dig a hole then pay him to fill it in again" Keynesians.
And then they wonder why debt grows so much faster than GDP, why purchasing power gets destroyed and why the middle class disappears...
Yeah that should take care of that 27 trillion dollar housing bubble backlash.
You gotta start somewhere - and there are plenty of these little expenditures in the dark corners that can be cut. I am posting a these here and there.
Heaven forbid we waste 1.2 million on stamps when we waste 100's of billions on military weapons we don't need.
When you buy one coffee each morning for $3 it's not that much but you're spending $1000 per year on coffee. These single examples are not that much but the accumulated cost when you add them all up is substantial. If there is one thing I hate is the argument it's only <insert dollar amount here> especially when it comes from a politician. My local politician says it's only a few thousand, my county politician says it's only a few hundred thousand, my state politician says it's only a few million and my Congressman claims it's only a few billion....
National defense is a function of government, you may argue we spend too much but this is completely different because these examples are for uneccasry expenditures.
