I don't deny that but those 2 major holidays are the only ones where retail and fast food are closed. They are open on all others.

Yeah, it really does. It's one of those basic divisions within the United States, like red/blue. Almost all Americans either orient more or less toward Canada or toward Mexico, and the remainder aren't quite sure where those two places are.

Not really. Probably less than 10% of the United States lives within 100 miles of Canada. On the other hand I bet 80% of Canada lives within 100 miles of the USA. They care far more about us than we care what they do or don't do.

Many, if not most EU countries have Dec 24, 25 and 26 off. And the 6th of Jan of course.

A hundred-mile border zone isn't completely comprehensive, though. As a kid, in the early days of cable TV, we had three channels in addition to the broadcast network affiliates: a local independent station, one out of Portland, and CBC Vancouver. I and all my little friends lived several hundred miles from the BC border, but we absorbed a fair bit of Canadian culture all the same, eh?

Malls and most retailers are closed for Easter too..
