I thought that one of the major reasons cited for owning guns, aside from hunting, was to discourage people from breaking into your house at all. Maybe people should have a gun safe in which to store their guns when they're away from home, unless the only gun they own is the one they carry with them, of course.

In fact, I think one would have to be really, really stupid and slow to break into a house where they KNOW there are guns in order to try to steal them. Adam Lanza was not stupid. Additionally, if a really stupid person tried to break in and succeeded, what does that say about your ability to "secure" your home?

NY has one of the more restrictive gun laws in the country. You need a permit to own a handgun. Under NY law unless specifically legislated those are open records. Most state have already headed this off and there is new legislation being proposed in NY but the damage is already down here for those that have been listed.

I still don't understand why the gun owners are so upset, seems that they like for people to know they own guns.
If you owned some expensive jewelry would you mind having your name listed in a newspaper?

Other than giving criminals a road map to the houses to avoid or seek out depending on what they want to steal this serves no purpose.

But when it comes to burglary of an unoccupied building, having the information public could make one a target for burglary. I'd think that would be obvious.
Well, one can NEVER be absolutely sure that no one is home, now, can they? That's a pretty big risk to take. And IMO a very stupid risk.

What I think is obvious is that having your name, etc., listed in the newspaper as owning a gun or guns is like a big neon sign to people with questionable motives to STAY AWAY.

Most people do not advertise they own a gun and it is not a deterrent if the thief knows you have it because they can simply show up when you're not there.

I can't shoot people with jewelry regardless of how expensive it is.

Guns are a very desirable thing to steal especially if you want one and can't obtain it legally.

It's really not a sure thing to know when "you're not there." Do you suppose someone would take the risk of being a stranger hanging out in your neighborhood watching your house to see when you leave, all the while knowing you have a gun/guns and that you might accidentally shoot him/her? Or better yet, call the police to see what he's up to?

Why not give the criminals the advantage and publish the names of the gun grabbers. They will be easy pickings for them.

That isn't the point, both jewelery and guns are very desirable things to steal because they can easily be sold for very large amounts of money. There may not be be s better thing to steal than a weapon as far as value goes.

And it seems that they are very dangerous things to try to steal from someone's home; after all, they can be used to kill people.
