First of all, most of us "lefties" do not want to ban guns. We want guns to be owned by those who use them appropriately, and with the care and consideration that such weapons deserve. We want to ban assault weapons from those who are not engaged in warfare. . . ..as we believe they have no place in the average home, for hunting or protection. We recognize that we live in a society where there are large numbers of people who suffer from mental health problems that cause them to use "poor judgement" where the use of lethal force is concrned, and who will likely harm either themselves of others if they have easy access to lethal weapons. We recognize that there are certain groups of people in this country who profit financailly from createing fear of others in the general populace, and who use this fear to market as many lethal weapons as they can. We believe that fear based motivation, especially that drummed up by those who see a profit in creating it, can and does cause weapons to be used recklessly and without legitimate need. We want sensible protections against these societal dangers, period. We DO NOT want to take away your weapons used for sporting or subsistance purposes, we do not want you to feel "powerless" in the presence of legitimate enemies, but we would very much like to see you feel confident in yourselves and in sensible measures to provide for and protect your family and loved ones, and believe that that confidence comes not from "fear based" behavior, but from clear thought process and reasonable precaution.
How do we weigh one against the other? For instance, how many instances of brandishing a gun to stop a property crime does it take to equal a fatal drive-by shooting?
.
You don't know if the criminal is only after your property. When someone uses violence against you, you can only assume he's after your life otherwise why you would need to pull out your gun to deploy deadly force?
When some law abiding citizen brandishing a gun, a proper assumption is that she or he is reasonably believe that it's a situation of immediate death or greatly bodily harm.
Q:What is the real reason people want to ban guns?
Who is talking about banning guns?
When you are 79, sitting in a rocker on your front porch, stroking your gun with your shakey hand, will you ponder why you spent so much time and energy, worrying that "they" were coming for your guns?
Criminals will always be able to get what they want no matter what laws we pass. It's really stupid of us to think that passing a law will curtail anything. You'd think we would have learned a lesson from prohibition.

If you wanted that, you wouldn't be telling us what we can own......UNLESS it's a quality issue.
Bring a Jennings J-22 to a Sig Sauer P-226 9mm fight.....you will lose.
Bring a Tec-9 to a AR-15 A2 fight....you will lose.
No one gives a flying fawk about shooting deer and ducks.
You can do that with a single shot shotgun or crossbow for Christs sake.

Not ALL your guns, just your scary black ones, and any gun that can shoot more than 10 rounds at a time. Next year we'll go after semi-auto ones, then your pistols and rifles the year after and then your shotguns. Finally, we expect you to give up your BB guns... before someone shoots their eye out.
ALL GUNS WERE MEANT FOR THE SAME PURPOSE, TO KILL. Far more random crazy shootings have happened with plain old "normal" guns. No anti-gun "leftie" really wants to stop at "Assault Weapons"... they want them all crushed.
nope, the only reason for gun control laws is "control". the government seeks to control the people and they know that cannot do so if the people are armed.

I know and not all laws are bad, but the homicide rate in the US is 4.7-5.2. However, we know that a chunk of black men suffer an endless cycle of social ills and end up contributing to half of the homicide rate. Just imagine if we could cut that rate to 25%, not unreasonable considering we are talking about less than 7% of the US population. If we did that we would be right about where Switzerland and still have room to improve. Instead we say it's the gun, gotta we the gun.
.We [the left] want to ban assault weapons from those who are not engaged in warfare. . . ..as we believe they have no place in the average home, for hunting or protection...
That is demonstrably not true. I live in the Seattle area; Seattle is as left-wing as any city in the US. Yet the police carry AR-15's and Glock 22's with hi-capacity magazines--both assault weapons, at least according to the bizarre and convoluted definition of Dianne Feinstein's 1994 "assault weapon" ban.
The Seattle city council, as lefty as they come, could have easily turned back the clock and ordered that cops go back to shotguns and revolvers. But they didn't. I don't know off-hand how things are in other lib-controlled cities such as SF, LA, Boston, Chicago, etc, but I'm going out on a limb and guessing that it's the same story. Cops are not engaged in warfare. Their guns serve the same defensive purposes as any citizen's guns.
So the left does not exactly "want to ban assault weapons from those who are not engaged in warfare.". No what they want is to take these guns away from the individual, and leave them only in the hands of the collective.
