Is it possible that about half of us really want to live in a world where where the wealthy have "everything" and the workers scrape to get by? Where one needs to carry weapons to defend oneself against one's neighbors, where fear is the prevelent attitude amoung such a large percentage of the population, and where the attitude of cooperation amoung residents to achieve a common good is looked upon with disgust?

About 47% seem to feel that way (ie. how many voted for Mitt Romney).

Mainstream viewpoints for the most part are not newsworthy because they don't get the blood pumping. The lunatic fringe gets all the press because folks will sit up and take notice.

Lately, one of the major political parties has embraced this fringe, giving them a lot more than normal coverage.

We are being pushed toward polarization and extremism.

You may think that, but then republicans may think all liberals are crazy for thinking the opposite. I still believe most of us are well-adjusted people, and that the media and other sources of information are just playing us and our emotions against each other to solicit responses to major events, usually crazy ones. Crazy gets the airtime these days.

I agree. Most Americans support New Deal reforms, even among many Republicans. If you're one of those Keep Your Hands Off My Medicare and Social Security type Republicans, please thank FDR when you're finished ranting. Don't worry, no one will be looking.

At least, I hope so.
This thread is a case in point in pushing towards extremism. All the OP is doing is generalizing millions of people to an extreme while others self-righteously encourage it.

If we must be partisan...

I think it is crazy for Obama to have broken so many promises and his followers to simply ignore that.

I think it is crazy for Obama to talk in 2008 of America being destroyed by debt and then to add more debt and his followers don't even bat an eye lash.

I think it is crazy that Obama talked of social security being insolvent in 2008 and none of his followers care that five years later he has offered no plan while demonizing those that have.

Oh, but did that ever come with a price......

Get this, Liberals who laud FDR as the most humane pres ever don't know that he really was the biggest war mongering president ever. "Don't worry", I won't tell...

The Crazification Factor states it's about 27%. but I think it is a bit low.

I think the world has become such a complex place, and such a rapidly moving place, that some people just give up their mental processes to gut reactions. If people have a more grounded view of reality, more knowledge, or even just a plain willingness to look beyond themselves then it can be corrected with reason. The more ignorant the person is, obstinate in the face of change, fearful, or views based on something that isn't grounded the more irrational they tend to be across the board.
