See, you're doing what so many preppers do just like Rational wiki said. Survivalists, I won't call them Preppers, are not just preparing for some sort of emergency or disaster like is normal and responsible and instead their central belief is that the world is going to end or at least civilization as we know it is about to collapse any second now. That's the fundamental part of survivalism as an ideology and that's the crazy part.
Sure, if someone take care of the real world needs and then still has money left over to indulge in their mad max fantasies about dressing up and playing army then have at it but the point is many, maybe even most, of them aren't doing that. They're ignoring much more pressing and far more likely to happen real world needs to the exclusion of their fantasy distopia. Moving out to BFE to build their fortified doombunker and posting online about how they think hordes of black and hispanic "welfare parasites" as supposedly coming to steal their horde of canned spam and ramen noodles so they're going to be one man with his AR-15 to hold the hordes off. Sorry but those type of fantasies along with fantasies are boozo land crazy.
Now you personally might not be in that category of survivalists even though they're EXTREMELY common (even the norm) on prepper/survivalist forums but you know what they say about sleeping with pigs right? You end up smelling like them so don't get mad when people associate you with the crazies.
Lmao....oh I'm not angry. I know what I am about, and I don't "dress up and play army" as you put it. I have no fantasies about living in a Mad Max world. I just have enough on hand to keep me n mine safe, warm and fed, should we have to leave home. Wildfire is our biggest danger here, anx we have had to bug out before. Believe me, it was not a bad thing not to have to crowd into an emergency shelter in a school gym.
Folks can call me crazy, or imagine I smell of the pigs I supposedly lie with. Don't matter a fart in a high wind to me. My business is my own. I was merely commenting on stereotypes, and sure, if you're hanging out on survivalist blogs, of course nuts will be the norm. That doesn't come close to making them a real life majority.
At any rate, no harm no foul, life is peachy, and I figger it will be till it ain't.
Because it is funny and people have been doomsday preparing long before the internet was around. Stocking up on canned goods and being prepared for a disaster or a long power outage is fine, preparing for the end of the world is stupid.
This. Entire societies don't collapse overnight barring nuclear holocaust or invasions from the bug planet Klendathu. And at that point you got a whole lot more on your plate besides where to stash your five gallon drums of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and porn.
Apparently the folks in Jersey are much smarter than the folks in NOLA.
Still waiting 3 months after the fact for Obama to come through. Bush was getting hell 10 days after Katrina for FEMA lagging behind and not coming through or paying up and out. I guess Obama doesn't control FEMA like Bush apparently did.
So much for Obama cutting the red tape for the Sandy victims and this is yet another example of how well government works for the people. Obama makes promise after promise and breaks each one but not one of the Obama lovers questions it.
Obama lovers ask yourself, would you like it if you were a Sandy Victim, Obama promised to cut the red tape for you and after you voted for him he forgot about you and didn't do a thing to help you.
I also heard that the concert they held to help the Sandy victims, the money they made did not go to the victims either.
I'm not sure why you're trying to make this an Obama issue when it was very clearly the Republican Congress which denied funding for it for almost two months. Facts. They're still there even if you want to pretend they're not.
I've noticed that anytime anyone here talks about preparedness for things like natural disasters, civil unrest, gov. instability, etc etc etc there are quite a few of you on the left who instantly mock or insult those of us who prepare for various types of situations that might otherwise put us in danger or a desperate situation. I don't want to dive into different types of preparedness because that will just end up as a pro-gun/anti-gun troll fest. Let's please just keep this at a high level when speaking of preparedness which would encompass anything from storing drinking water and canned food all the way up to people buying stockpiles of freeze dried or dehydrated food and even people who keep weapons of any kind to defend against whatever/whoever might try to cause them harm.
Am I just reading some of you wrong or do you really believe that being prepared is something that should be mocked or do you only do this because the people you mock just happen to be to the right of the political isle?
Overall I guess I'm just curious as to why a lot of liberals seem to have a dislike of people who prepare for potential negative events.
We don't mock preparation for emergencies; we mock outright paranoia and delusion. There is a difference.
Because I've heard this stuff all my life. I'm 50. When I was a kid I'd hear my G-parents talk about storing food away in case the economy collapsed. They promised me the world would end in 2000 as far back as the 70's.
I just don't want to live my life in fear. It's like the fear of flying. If you die in a plane crash you're just plain unlucky. Why worry about doomsday for the same reason?
Why are people who prepare to be able to live "off the grid" for a few months accused of preparing for the end of the world and living in fear?
Many people, myself included, believe that being able to live without municipal-provided water, or electricity, is a responsible thing to do. I live in Texas. Our water supply last year was in serious danger. Also, when Hurricane Ike came through, we were without electricity for a week. Some families didn't have electricity for several weeks. It rained so hard for so long that we were stranded in our house due to a bridge being destroyed and the creek being flooded and we weren't able to even get past our driveway for 2 or 3 days. And this could have been worse - just ask the people in New Orleans or Montgomery, Alabama, or the people who lived through Hurricane Sandy and were stuck in high rise apartment buildings with no electricity for weeks.
I have a family. I am responsible for their welfare. I take that responsibility seriously.

Who's "we?" You got a hamster in your pocket?
Speak for yourself. There are MANY people who do mock "preppers," - even those who are preparing for something like a breakdown in the food supply, which could be caused by something like a truck driver or shipping yard worker strike.

You make a very good point, a lot of my preparedness is done to make sure I'm not harmed by the labor union thuggery.

PS - that's my reason for ridiculing survivalist. Which is a whole lot different from how I feel about people who own generators, keep extra food in the house, flash lights medical supplies in case of some temporary collapse of local services.
[MOD CUT/personal attack] My family's land (40 acres in the middle of nowhere) can easily sustain plenty of us if we till the land and kill the game on the land; also having weaponry will only help defeat you and yours if and when you think your commie butt is going to come and confiscate it from us - if you can find it, that is.
