I've read it twice...There I guess that makes me a liar. I don't think ANY books should be mandated by the government and Ayn Rand would agree. I do, however, wish that every high schooler would read it of his or her own volition. They might graduate from college with some semblance of independent thought rather than being brainwashed by socialist professors.
Because that book is the one book protecting people's minds from "being brainwashed by socialist professors?" Right, you keep believing that.
This is why my daughter takes most of her classes online. So she can take real AP classes. Her school decided they would turn one of their English classes into an "AP" class. They read 40 pages of Beowulf that the teacher printed off and then got hung up making up and coloring family crests.
I'm beginning to believe that certain states can not be trusted with their children's educations.
It's more pushback from parents.
They won't buy the books.
You can't do a class reading if the entire class does not have the book.
It's way different these days. Schools cannot afford to buy paperbacks year after year for every child in their school system. So teachers get a set and that is shared by all students in that grade level.
When I was in school we had a summer reading list. You either bought the book or checked it out from the library. At the start of school there was a list of required books for the year and they were sold right there at the school.
Those days are long gone. Remember the scholastic book fairs ? That's pretty much gone as well and those brochures are full of games and gadgets with a few books tossed in and kids/parents don't even bother with it. I remember it was a big deal when I was in school.
Honestly..just print off the list of the Great Classics and have her read from that list.
That will do more to enrich her literacy education than anything she is going to get in school these days.

I'm not worried about me being indoctrinated into anything.
I'm not even too worried about my own children being indoctrinated into anything.
I'm worried about you, your children and the millions like you who are throwing away your legacy of liberty and independence and don't even know it. (and ours with it)
You'll probably come back with some kind of insult or joke. You have no idea how rare experiments in liberty like the past 200+ years in America are. This is the exception - A Constitutionally based Democratic Republic, not the rule. The idea of people being governed by their consent is radical and not really understood.
Words like Liberty, Freedom, Individualism are punch lines today. People willingly gave their lives to guarantee these rights for you. They acknowledged these rights come from a higher power and can only be protected, not granted or denied by any form of moral government.
You and others of your generation will throw this away in the name of equality and empowerment without realizing the hypocrisy of the lies and misinformation you have been given. This is no bleary eyed conspiracy theory - it is human nature.
I know I'm not going to convince you of anything now - but as you grow perhaps someday you'll begin to see how sad our current state really is. Our weakness and dependence has been sold to us by propaganda and indoctrination. We are a tremendously wealthy nation that is surrendering our sovereignty and all that goes with it willingly through ignorance and apathy.

Now that is a good book, it is a shame they only got to read 40 pages of it and then had to do a pointless project on it. I do wonder about some states' education program, it definitely varies from state to state in this country and the effects definitely show.

I am worried about the far right taking over the country and spreading their hate and message of freedom for me, but not for you. Our country can survive without the far right radicals of this country trying to turn us into their utopian dream.

There is a good deal of poverty in Idaho. If the parents can't buy the books and the state has cut school funding to the bone...how does this idiot legislator plan to require every student to read a particular book?

Send him an email letting him know he will have to pay for each copy out of his own pocket because he cut your school funding

Who are the far right?
What is their message of hate?
What is this message of 'freedom' that is for others, not for you?
Who is pushing the idea of Utopia?
