No, I think it's to teach people how to speak American. Otherwise the British might rise again.
To the OP, I have wondered this myself. The vast majority of our bases are located in the mid east and Europe and I can understand the mid east, but not Europe.
Part of it is probably to keep our employment rate artificially high. Not only our troops but the increasing non governmental organizations and corporations being sustained by this military complex.
150 is really stretching the facts. We only have significant combat capable troops in about 12 countries. The rest are liaison people who work out of the embassies.
Just think of the headache the president would have (and presidents before him) if every soldier was brought home and a large number of them had to find a job.
So the answer seems to be to keep unemployment numbers down. I'm happy to listen to a better argument but it seems no one is able to provide one.
