The state of New York will begin treating most alleged prostitutes as victims rather than criminals, and seek to steer them toward medical treatment, job training and other social services to break the cycle of sex trafficking.

The highest-ranking judge in the state, Jonathan Lippman, announced the initiative Wednesday and said that it was the first of its kind in the United States."
New York sets up special courts to handle prostitution and trafficking cases - U.S. News

Excellent news. I hope this leads to the decriminalization of sex work altogether.

Prostitution is a medical matter? Who knew?

This is a step forward in the same way that we went from witch hunts to gay hunts to sugary drink hunts. Just let them live their lives the way they see fit. No nanny overlords, whether police or medical, stepping in to order them what to do.

I wonder if your wife knows......

Unlike you who uses prostitutes and sees them as sex objects.... these forward thinking justices see them as human and in need of cures for addiction. Most prostitutes do not do it because they find your ugly ass attractive. They do it to support a drug habit or as a last resort occasionally to pay bills

So, yeah, chemical dependency is a medical matter

Kudos to the OP and these justices to try and help these desperate ladies

We're implementing legal brothels, where the girls will be far better protected than at the mercy of their pimps or making them climb into strangers' cars to be taken GodKnowsWhere, only to have their bodies turn up in a ditch or a shallow grave.
They'll pay taxes and be much safer.

Legal brothels haven't been so great for sex workers in Germany...

Human Trafficking Persists Despite Legality of Prostitution in Germany - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Unfortunately, even "legalized" prostitutes are still all too often at the mercy of pimps and human traffickers.

All victimless crimes should be taken off the books.

Isn't Prostitution already a criminal offence in NY for providing "sugar"?

We're not Germany. In any case, keeping it in the shadows isn't doing anyone any good.

Great news. From a regular user of escorts the experience is often diminished worrying about the cops pouncing on you.
