Criminals make up a small subset of legal firearms purchases. This thread/poll seems to intentionally avoid the black market in order to discuss an issue that really doesn't seem to have any basis in reality. How many violent criminals do you know who go into a gun shop and attempt to purchase a gun? Relative to the number of gun sales, not many at all. They do it through straw purchases. FFL's nationwide are more concerned about straw purchases than they are selling a gun directly to a criminal because of the background check process. It's easy to get around.
Would you support a mandatory back ground check on all gun sales if you knew it would stop criminals from getting guns?
There already is a background check system in place. Go try to buy a gun right now and you'll wait for your turn because the system is overloaded with the mass buying going on and you'll see for yourself.
In Miami where I use to live even if you buy a single shot .22 rifle you have to wait five days after the back ground check before you can take it home.
BTW, background checks for most firearms transactions, constitutional or not, have been in force for many years. Yet the shootings, mass murders etc. have gone on and on. And some folks (including the President of the United States) say they are getting WORSE.
Where's the poll entry for "Since there's no evidence background checks stop anything, No, I don't support mandatory background checks." ?
Already have a background check and no it won't stop criminals from getting guns. How about making judges criminally liable for gun crimes committed by those they release from prison? Doubling sentences for those found guilty of gun crimes. Reducing alcohol content in whiskey and other alcoholic drinks. Speed governors on all cars. An ID required to eat at fast food places with a certain limit allowed per month.
