Hawkins said he thought Massie was threatening him.
Security video showed the two men a few feet apart as they emerged from the men’s room before Hawkins began to walk away. Massie’s hands were in his pockets as Hawkins then turned suddenly and threw the punch.
This is a clear case of self-defense. And if Mr. Hawkins had been conceal carry, he would have been within his 2nd Amendment rights to shoot Mr. Massie.

rights...They are for everybody.
Depends. Hawkins may have been viewed as escalating the fight if he reacted with a deadly weapon. The punch really wasn't that out of the ordinary for drunk men, but reacting with deadly force would have been inappropriate, imo. This is why people need to leave other people alone. Massie should have close his mouth, not taunted or tapped the Hawkins. Hawkins thought the man was coming back to make trouble and flew off the handle. Not to mention alcohol was involved. It's quite sad.
A punch is a punch. The white guy was unlucky. i don't support this being settled in courts, but if the white family feels strongly about this they can kill the black guy. And then harmony is achieved.
It makes sense, though very unfortunate. This has nothing to do with playing any race card. The reason the man didn't get murder is because he didn't have required mental state. Generally speaking, people don't expect to kill someone by punching them. Now had he used something that would be expected to inflict a deadly wound, then the outcome would have been different.
