The Time article was long, but an interesting read. If you don't have adequate insurance, you are truly screwed in today's healthcare market. If you do have good insurance, you are probably paying thru the nose for it because hospitals are in the driver's seat when it comes to setting prices for care.
If everyone had to pay full price for health care, prices would have to come down. People simply couldn't pay $10000 to sit in the ER for a few hours then be told "take two of these and call me in the morning".
The article does point out some faults with Obamacare. Namely, the fact that eliminating limits on coverage will lead to rising premiums. It also mentions current malpractice issues as a contributor to rising costs.
However, the author ultimately reaches the conclusion that a single-payer system is the way to go, so it could hardly be labeled a conservative viewpoint.

I guess you are not old enough to remember.
Doctor visits were not covered by insurance.
You paid full price with your money.
There was no $15 copay and that's it.
Hospitalization was 80/20. You paid and got reimbursed.
Yeah..people actually paid for their healthcare and insurance was used for the hospital and emergencies.
Just like people used to pay college tuition with their own money.
But, that was back in the "old day" when people didn't spend all their money and then some and live heavily in debt. Hard to believe life was like that eh ?

You probably have no idea and don't care because it only "costs you $15" or whatever your copay is.
Nothing is 100% paid for.
What happened to "emergency funds" ?
Or paying off bills over time ?
People are living above their means and when a financial crisis hits they are doomed.
And medical facilities don't help these days either.
They don't want to collect money over time..right to the collection agencies if you can't pay in full.
Medical care is in a sad, sorry state.

I pretty much agree. How are individuals paying the full cost? That is the point of the "single payer" problem. I used to deposit cash in a bank to pay my taxes. It has a different feel to it. Trust me.
