A better question is, why does the census even have racial classifications?
According to the US Census:

OK, but why must those differences be accentuated by a census question?

Why not use the census for its intended purpose - to determine congressional apportionment?

I wasnt aware that the word "negro" was even on the forms. W/ that being said, I do see the need to have races on the form. Pretending that "race" doesnt exist is not going to make it go away. I don't get why ppl are so emotional about that. Like it or not we are not all exactly alike and that's a good thing. I personally like to know the demographics of the town or area that I'm vacationing in or moving to b/c I don't want to be the only one of my kind there. You know?

I don't see that mission statement in my copy of the U.S. Constitution.

But taking the statement at face value, what does diviiding people by race have to do with providing "quality information about the nation's people"?

B/c it's not realistic. You don't see people in other continents downplaying their race/heritage do you? Sure, they'll acknowledge their nationality, but they don't act as if they are all ethnically alike. A fine example would be the South American area.

Yup!
I hate this african american crap. You can't be both...either they get a europen american box or skip this all together.
Well you can be both if you have 2 passports, but that is not what this is about.

What does it matter really?

If black is so offensive, so is white.

What I don't understand is the new "AA" designation.

I always think of Alcoholics Anonymous when I see that, but it could also stand for "Asian American".
