When it comes to forms and race, I check "other" and write in American.
I get raised eyebrows, a chuckle or two but no one has ever asked me to change it.

Black/African Americans haven't been Negros for some forty years. It is an archaic term that apparently only some neanderthal white folks want to cling to. By your thinking the census should keep the term celestials to describe Asians, or redmen for Native Americans.
