That is my point. When referring to race, white people are referred to by their race (white or caucasian), not their region of origin. You don't see "Northern European American" on any census forms do you? That would be frickin' stupid.
If we are going to not allow white folks from South Africa to use "African-American" then perhaps black folks who trace their ancestry to the continent should use "sub-Saharan African American".
Yes - it really is foolish, and a perfect example of the insanity that ensues when we focus on differences rather than embrace unity.
B/c it's not realistic. You don't see people in other continents downplaying their race/heritage do you? Sure, they'll acknowledge their nationality, but they don't act as if they are all ethnically alike. A fine example would be the South American area.
We are a nation of immigrants. Who cares of what nationality as long as they come here legally? I don't.
By many metrics we are one of the least racist countries in the world.
