Their is more to auto safety than pounds of steel. Crush points, air bags, fuel line interrupters.
They out the metal where is matters, the passenger compartment.
Not to mention how much better new cars are at stopping or maneuvering, plus traction control/ABS which all help in the prevention on accidents.

Back then you had something called defensive driving, now it's offensive and aggressive driving. It's a people problem, not an auto problem. It's highly probable that all the safety measures have caused people to have a false sense of security and drive more recklessly.
Thankfully the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, established through the Highway Safety Act, has done much to lower the number of preventable automobile deaths since the 1970s. Federal regulation and supervision in such matters can be a wonderful thing. Thanks for reminding us of that fact, OP!!
I'm going to direct this back to the point, and that is YOU have no RIGHT, no Constitutional authority to DICTATE what I may purchase from a manufacturer or what they may manufacture. Your desire to protect people from their own choices (that is what this is because you don't think people are smart enough to choose whatever they want, for what ever reasons they have be it saving money or what ever...) is enough reason, in your warped mind, to dictate a part of each and every human life, regulating their choices, limiting based upon YOUR prejudices, because YOU have good intentions for their best interests and YOU are smarter than them.

The same classes are taught now as back then. If anything the average speed of cars has declined as congestion increases even though cars can safely travel faster than ever before.
Its not a static return. If you save one life by banning guns across the nation how many will die because they could not defend them-self? I am not willing to give up my guns because some crazy prozac video game nut shot some kids. Tragic as that is its reactionary. I am not going to sell my kitchen knife every time someone gets stabbed. And its not up to you to tell me my Kitchen Knife is too big or too sharp.
When kitchen knives are being used to cut down people by the dozens in schools,malls,theaters,etc.we may have to have a closer look at the knife laws. You may want to stock up.

Why do you say this? What evidence do you have that manufacturers would not improve designs absent government mandates? Show me ANY evidence that this is true.
Too bad the government hasn't done half that much to lower the number preventable gun deaths, by enacting some gun regulation.
The big difference here is that driving is NOT a consitutional RIGHT! Compare those regulations to voting, freedom of speech and religion and see how you like all those regulations!!
Ya know, people are SCREAMING their heads off about FREE ID's for people to verify that you're a legal citizen and actually are legal to vote... but you want to put tons of regulations on another, equally protected and much more important right! How does that even make sense?!?!
