Quote from the article: Faculty and students at academic institutions pursue knowledge and engage in open discourse. While at times the topics discussed may be sensitive, a university environment is a venue for such dialogue and debate," the school told WPRC in an email
Anybody think that the school would write the word Mohammed on a piece of paper, and ask students to stomp on it, in an effort to open dialogue?
Me neither.
This is ignorant, why put anyone's name on a paper and stomp it? I've never done this to anyone's name, besides it's an ignorant, and violent method to open a dialogue.

I agree. Once again, I would love to hear the professor's reasoning behind this exercise.

In a class called ''Intercultural Communications' I can see how the exercise is useful. The textbook's lesson synopsis states ---
“Have the students write the name JESUS in big letters on a piece of paper,” the lesson says. “Ask the students to stand up and put the paper on the floor in front of them with the name facing up. Ask the students to think about it for a moment. After a brief period of silence instruct them to step on the paper. Most will hesitate. Ask why they can’t step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture.”
Why Jesus ? I suppose the word could be something else, but Jesus is guaranteed to achieve the objective of hesitation and spark the purpose of the lesson --- Discuss the importance of symbols in culture.
I'll bet the same lesson occurs in colleges across the country, but the instructors don't punish students who won't step on the paper.
Just to be clear, the student was suspended from the class. Not from the school.
Being suspended from the class is going overboard. The professor should have just given him an 'F' for class participation for refusing to participate.
No he shouldn't even got an F. The student stood for his morals and he is to be applauded. He should be refunded the money he paid for the class, and given a refund on wasted time as well.

Thanks for the info
Ok then, it says "Ask why they can't step on the paper". It's a fair question to ask. It's not fair to ask this question and then MAKE the students step on it. This is where the professor drew the line in punishing the student.
I'm sure there are hundreds of other ways to teach this particular lesson as well. The act of offending people is NOT dialogue. This professor sucks.
someone will soon do something so big that will really intice the muzlims. this stomp on jesus is going to be a joke. someone will become pissed off enough and take action;

Ahh, the Examiner, the National Inquirer of our age.
Title should have been FAU Student Claims He Was Suspended For Refusing To Step On Jesus
I wonder what the reaction would be if muhammad was step on?
There is another article that actually states what the exercise was. The point was for some students to hesitate and refuse as a lead in to discussing the cultural importance of symbols. My guess is this guy went far beyond refusing, and threw a hissy fit over it, refused to participate, etc. He was not suspended for not stepping on it, he was suspended for what happened after he refused to step on it.
As to your question, I imagine there are many Muslim college students that would be in a uproar if the lesson asked them to step on a piece of paper with muhammad's name... and it would be just as silly of them to do that without understanding the point of the exercise.
Other students refused to step on the paper and were not suspended from the class. I suspect the student's over-reaction and escalation of the incident led to a situation where the teacher didn't want him in the class anymore. The student missed the point of the exercise and the class he signed up for. He wasn't suspended from class for not stepping on the paper.
