So many more guys still on that list from the 80s and early 90s, even a few from the 70s. How come they can't catch these guys?

The FBI tracked down one gangster here in Idaho last year after the guy had vanished for over 20 years.
This is a big country, and it's a lot easier to lay low and disappear than it is to find a crook.

The FBI is tenacious. Whitey Bulger was on their Top 10 list for decades, but they got him. If you look at the Top 10 of 20 years ago, at least half or more were eventually arrested. Some others were found to have died, and others still remain at large.

It's unrealistic to expect law enforcement is going to find every criminal that gets away, but the odds are most will eventually be found.

The reason is simple. The FBI spends the majority of it's time and it's money on security related issues. That leaves little for crime issues. A very good solution to this bad state of affairs would be to remove completely all security functions from the FBI and give those functions to an agency devoted to internal security.

They most likely specifically get put on that list because they haven't been caught for a while. That list keeps em in the lights so to say.

Why is our FBI so inept at catching dangerous criminals?

Ummm... because Democrats keep re-electing them?

FBI director can't even answer a question about whether US citizens can be killed by drones in our country and folks expect em to catch bad guys. Just call 911 and all will be ok.

This reminds me of a book about the early days of the FBI HRT, an elite kind of SWAT-style unit of the FBI. They had latitude regarding dress code, and some of them had long hair, beards, grungy clothes, etc.

In one incident they had cornered a long-sought white supremacist who was a suspect in the murder of a Denver radio talk host named Allan Berg. The white supremacist apparently escaped the dragnet by walking into the HRT squad & mingling among them. His appearance fit right in with HRT guys. He worked his way to the edge of the perimeter, and just walked away. People thought he must be FBI, so nobody dared stop him.

Stupid criminals get caught easily. Smart ones, who understand all the ways that law enforcement works to hunt down fugitives, and who potentially have friends or groups helping them, are tougher to find.
