Many claim that the media has a liberal bias. Do you agree or disagree?
If you agree, why would journalists be left-leaning? How would such political ideologies benefit them professionally?
Also, is it a chicken and egg matter? In other words, are left-minded people more likely to enter the journalism profession, or does the profession itself influence one's political leanings?
If you disagree, why are so many people convinced that the media is biased? What do you suppose is behind it all (propaganda machine, political correctness, etc)? Is there enough ideological diversity in the media?
The politically flavored channels, Fox News and MSNBC, are openly biased.
The major networks are profit-driven corporations, looking for ratings. They tend to sensationalize nearly every "news" story in order to hold an audience. Some may not be able to differentiate between political bias and media sensationalism.
At some point the mass media news switched their emphasis from reporting the news to creating the news. I think the liberal bias comes from self selection and association of like minds. PBS isn't too bad but all the rest swing pretty wide. Only one major TV news channel, FOX, swings right, the rest swing left. MSNBC is the most biased channel to ever claim it is a news channel, unless you are planning on counting the 700 Club as news. I know lots of people will dispute me and say it is FOX, but MSNBC out does them and takes the cake.

According to a 2004 Pew study journalists self identified themselves as Liberal in substantially higher numbers than the general public. Very few indentified themselves as Conservative.
Journalists at national and local news organizations are notably different from the general
public in their ideology and attitudes toward political and social issues. Most national and local
journalists, as well as a plurality of Americans (41%), describe themselves as political moderates.
But news people – especially national journalists – are more liberal, and far less conservative, than
the general public.
About a third of national journalists (34%) and somewhat fewer local journalists (23%)
describe themselves as liberals; that compares with 19% of the public in a May survey conducted
by the Pew Research Center. Moreover, there is a relatively small number of conservatives at
national and local news organizations. Just 7% of national news people and 12% of local journalists
describe themselves as conservatives, compared with a third of all Americans.

FOX isnt openly bias, (by which i mean they claim they are unbiased)

Journalists self-identify as liberals at a far higher rate than the general population, so there really is no question about the profession being left-leaning. And it seems inevitable that this would show up in their work, even if many of them are trying to objective.

A big part of the business is stirring up controversy and making people think there is something wrong in the normal order of things. It is inherently anti-conservative to some extent.
And of course there is the Jewish factor...

I'm sure it works both ways. People enter the profession to "make a difference," then they learn what sorts of stories are well received and which aren't.

The major networks only sensationalize certain types of stories and certain angles on these stories. Profit motive alone can not explain how they operate.
The mainstream media do very little real investigative journalism. I really don't differentiate between them. They mostly all work for huge media corporations and have to toe the line.
