I was born in Norway. My ancestors were vikings. I've been watching those Capital One viking commercials for a few years now and have decided that I am offended.
These viking commercials are an affront to my ancestors and (by extension) an affront to me. They depict my people as dirty, disrespectful, illiterate barbarians who possess no impulse control and who leave havoc and destruction in their wake. They make fun of and are derogatory to all Norwegians of the past, and by extension they make fun of and are derogatory towards me.
I am deeply offended that a large company chooses to objectify and marginalize my people for financial gain. Whenever I see one of these commercials I feel hurt and demeaned. The repurcussions of these continual stereotypes upon my self-esteem are far reaching. So far reaching that the feelings of inadequacy I feel are becoming debilitating.
I am offended by this affront to my people. Who do I call to complain?
I am SO SICK AND TIRED of these Northern Norsemen coming over here and trying to shove their Viking Agenda down our throats. Who's with me?!?!?!?!?!?
Seriously though. Nice post. People forget a very fundamental thing: you do not have the right to NOT be offended.
Everybody is going to be offended by something.
The appropriate response is not to go on a crusade to censor or stamp out things you don't like; it is simply to avoid or not partake of those things you do not personally like.

You do have a right to be offended and I have a right to not care.
