Ok: why does a name like Rodriguez, Sanchez, Garcia and so 1 "brand" even a "white" person "Hispanic" even if they DON'T speak Spanish and so on but that same rule doesn't always go for American Indians, Blacks and other "non white" people?

But an English last name like Smith or Jones does NOT always mean "anglo".

It doesn't. I have friends who are Spaniards (either Spanish citizens or emigrated directly from Spain to the US) who are not considered Hispanic.

Latin American roots determine the designation of "Hispanic"

Anyone can claim to be 'Hispanic'. It's a completely made up 'race'.

Check the box and tell them to prove you aren't 'Hispanic'.

It is just a made up race. More and more "hispanic" means illegals --- if a politician doesn't want to reward foreigners who break our laws, he's somehow anti-hispanic -- ironic because Cesar Chavez was against illegals.

Vicente Fox himself does not have a Spanish last name, and Romney's family immigrated from Mexico.

It does also go for blacks. Almost anyone can claim to be black if they want. The idea with the Hispanic and black clubs is power in numbers so the more the merrier. It's just the opposite with American Indians though who get an amount of money from casino revenues and divvy it up. For them the idea is to restrict membership as much as possible.

The Indians don't restrict it very much --- you can have 15 non-Indian ancestors and just one Indian ancetor and get in on some of that casino and other Indian money in many cases. And some tribes have only recently come to be.

I think it's time to eliminate all race-based advantages. It's especially odd to have race based advantages to those whose ancestors were never brought here in chains, or who were not members of an American Indian tribe. Giving racial preferences to recently arrived immigrants is ridiculous.

Hispanic as a race only came about after affirmative action made being a disadvantaged minority an big advantage.

Tell that to the US government:

Hispanic or Latino Origin

"Hispanics or Latinos are those people who classified themselves in one of the specific Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino categories listed on the Census 2010 questionnaire -"Mexican," "Puerto Rican", or "Cuban"-as well as those who indicate that they are "another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin." People who do not identify with one of the specific origins listed on the questionnaire but indicate that they are "another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin" are those whose origins are from Spain, the Spanish-speaking countries of Central or South America, or the Dominican Republic. The terms "Hispanic," "Latino," and "Spanish" are used interchangeably.

Origin can be view as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States.

People who identify their origin as Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino may be of any race. Thus, the percent Hispanic should not be added to percentages for racial categories."

In other words, EVERYONE can be hispanic IF they identify themselves as such!

My daughter is blond, blue-eyed, with two non-hispanic parents. Yet, because she was born in Central America, the US Census Bureau allows her to official identify as hispanic! Go figure.
