Inside: Russias Toughest Prisons (National Geographic) FULL VIDEO - YouTube
Is this too harsh or we should learn some lessons from the Russians? I haven't heard of any U.S. prisons where inmates have to get up at 6 am and are not allowed to even sit on their bed for 16 hrs, while responding to guards as "Yes, Sir". I wonder what guards do behind the camera to make them comply like that.
Obviously, not every criminal should be treated like this, but perhaps murderers, terrorists and child rapists deserve this kinda treatment so perhaps others would think twice.
Outside of the fact this video has been a one hour TV show for well over a year...
There is a reason America has the largest prison population in the world....
On a worldwide scale American prisons are rated the same as three star hotels.
Only difference? prisons are free....
We have such a large prison population because there are so many ways to get thrown in prison in the USA. Among them, drugs. A very large chunk of the prison population is there because of drug-related crimes, and for long stretches depending on which drug is used.
On a world-scale, U.S. prisons might be rated the same as 3 star hotels, but how are they rated in the USA?

I wouldn't mind harsh treatment for murderers and rapists. However, there is one thing to consider. Russia's murder rate is much higher than the USA murder rate. The film even says this. The prison system inNorway isn't this harsh, and the crime rate isn't as bad. It brings up a question. Russia has a very harsh prison system, and yet, crime is a major issue in Russia, and a relatively high murder rate. It makes me wonder how Norway's prison system works fine, and yet, crime still persists in Russia.

Norway has a solid education, health and safety net system in place. When you go to prison there you can actually focus on improving yourself and when you get out - even in the worst of circumstance - you will have food and shelter. In Russia the complete opposite is true, at least in terms of the safety net. Russia is improving very quickly though, the murder rate dropped by 2/3 in just a few years; it used to be 20 per 100K and now it is around 10 per 100K.

Russia ranks high in education, but the safety net and health system, well, I can agree that both are rather bad. I've heard there are alot of street children in Moscow, and a rapidly growing AIDS rate. There is alot of violent activity from the Russian mafia. Russia's murder rate even reached 30 murders per 100,000 at one point. The murder rate has dropped alot in Russia. However, so has the USA's murder rate.

The US has, by far, the highest incarceration rate in the world and some of the lengthiest sentences for some of the dumbest "crimes."
If youre implying lenient punishment isnt a powerful enough detractor from crime perhaps we should start beheading shoplifters.
Except anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the world around them knows that poverty breeds crime. Maybe instead of cutting education funds to build prisons we should be doing the exact opposite.
