What disrespect nominating this man for such an important position.

Dominicans Rage Against Obama's Gay Ambassador Pick | The Cable

Quote:
If confirmed, Brewster will be the first openly gay ambassador to the country, a prospect that is not going over well with some segments of this conservative Christian country of 9 million people. Local reports indicate that church leaders are pressuring the government to reject Brewster's nomination and calling on the faithful to dress in black on Monday in solidarity against him.

Praise Christian Church Pastor Sauford Medrano is quoted in Diario Libre as saying that Brewster could cause "the U.S. promotion of gender beliefs in the country." That supposedly violates a general education law in the country that "all the Dominican education system is based on Christian principles."

Gay U.S. Ambassador Nominee To Dominican Republic Exposes Cultural Rift | Fox News Latino

Quote:
An informal poll by Dominican newspaper Hoy showed 60 percent of respondents were against the Catholic Church's criticism of Brewster. Another poll conducted by Pulso Dominicano showed that 57 percent believe the Dominican government should protect and provide more opportunity for gays to hold public office.

Hopefully Brewster will stand-up for himself and tell the church leaders to shut their faces if they don't like him.

Maybe we need to send Gay ambassador to Saudi Arabia or Russia? We wouldn't want to offend their culture though

I fail to see any disrespect. Is the man somehow unqualified?

He is morally repugnant to many Dominican people. He won't be effective.

The Dominicans need to stop whining and finally join the 21st century.

They don't like our ambassador, who happened to be born gay? Tough.

I bet Dominicans like you less than gays because you are African.

By the way, Dominican Republic is not an anti gay place. There are night clubs and support groups all over that side of the island.
