I'm one of the only people in my social circle who doesn't have the organ donor sticker on my license. I know that this sort of thing is super-rare, but it's also the reason I don't have one. I had a friend in high school who was hit by a car whose organs were donated before they contacted his family, and they were suspicious that they'd harvested them early. They probably didn't and their accusations were most likely the cries of grieving parents, but the whole affair left me somewhat paranoid... even after I worked in a hospital.
Besides, who'd want my guts? They're fatty and full of booze
Well, I'm in nursing, and given all the procedures and stop-gaps involved when it comes to organ donation, something like this is inconceivable. People already have too many misconceptions when it comes to donation, and this story will just feed into that.

Yes, I'd certainly let this microscopically rare event and an irrational perception of something that in all likelihood did not happen prevent me from doing something that might save someone else's life.

In large part because the media feeds into this type of nonsense. Remember when Oprah had suburban women all whipped up about a spark igniting at the gas pump?

Hell yes. I still touch something to discharge my static electricity before I touch the pump! And, don't use my cell phone; AND I don't dare move lest I cause more static electricity!

Not me; I love to rub balloons and drag my feet on the carpet in my car when pumping gas. Gotta have some excitement in life.

Thanks, I haven't had my share of backhanded comments today

You cannot deny things happen like this just because you fear the adverse effect on organ donations. On a daily basis the medical profession amputates the wrong appendage, removes the wrong organ, operates on the wrong part of the body(i.e. wrong brain hemisphere), etc.
We have one of the best medical systems in the world, yet it is run by human beings, so mistakes do and will continue to happen.
