Holder and the DOJ are preserving the evidence to show the masses that they are serious about trying to make federal charges stick. That means the gun, hoodie, skittles, etc. all stay in an evidence locker until this is resolved.
Since Zimmerman has not been convicted of any crime, he is not prevented from owning any firearms. Assuming his CCW is still active, he may even carry them with him in public.
Although right now he's probably not real keen on going out in public.
Holder and the DOJ want us to depend on the Government. It is about taking away the rights of any single individual. That is why they took this story to the national level. They don't give one rip about Trayvon Martin.
Holder, retains possession of the gun, as a symbolic and legal demonstration to the anti GZ crowd that he is conducting an investigation.
Holder feels confident his actions will be enough to deceive that portion of the public who are blinded by racist rants from the likes of Al Sharpton and other professional racebaiters.
If EH is indeed the face of our justice system, he is compelled by law to return GZ's gun.
To demonstrate to the world that our justice system is our bond, EH must return the gun to GZ or he makes a farce out of the US justice sysytem.
Selective enforcement of our laws is the basis for prejudice and bias.

Harrier wonders how many people who buy into the "white-Hispanic" nonsense and whom are Eric Holder supporters have noticed that George Zimmerman has darker skin pigmentation than the Attorney General?
Because you never felt the need to use lethal force to protect yourself, then no one else needs it?
That is not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that lethal force was not in any way needed in this case. I say Zimmerman is a COWARD and cowards are the most dangerous azzhats there are when they are scared. They are the ones who pull out a gun and shoot someone who looks at them in a way they think is threatening. There is no way a person of this type should be doing what Zimmerman was. Of course there is a point when extreme force is needed to protect yourself but this surely is not the case here. Unfortunately, we even have cops of Zimmerman's type who shoot at the least provocation. They shouldn't be cops in the first place if they are so afraid.
BAD dogs are the same. They attack when they feel threatened. The problem is, everything is a threat. Those dogs need to be put down because they are an extreme danger just as an armed Zimmerman is an extreme danger.
Kel-Tecs are cheap. A pf9 (the gun he owns) is well under $300. He can pick up another one whenever he wants, if he wants to, or he can get something else.
The same can be said about anything that is stolen from you. Does that mean that stealing things from you is OK?
Not at all. He has not, at this time, been charged with violating ANY federal laws; Holder has no right to seize his property. That property was originally seized as evidence in state charges, which he has since been cleared of. What Holder is doing is theft, pure and simple. A man of utter incompetence, promoted just because he's a lackey of Booboo's.
