The reason why the U.S. can't celebrate nationalism, is because it is seen as racist, and anti-diversity. Sadly, it does contribute to a weakening of the American spirit. It is also experienced as believing your own culture is superior to others, and since many people consider the U.S. the greatest country on earth, we as Americans are seen as arrogant.
During WWII there was a considerable amount of nationalism in the U.S, which is part of what created such good unit cohesion, and support in the military. There was a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. But, that type of attitude is not considered politically correct today. There used to be immigration laws (The National Origins Act) that favored immigration from certain western European countries over other countries, since those people came from cultures that were more similar to ours. Those laws were dismantled during the LBJ administration, and since then the country has often been considered a mess, with many new immigrants often having difficulty adapting to a free capitalist society.

It occurs to me that it would be quite hard to impose dictatorial rule over a society united by common heritage, common history, common ideals and a love of liberty.
It's a lot easier to rule with an iron fist when the nation is divided by sectarian and ethnic strife, and reeling from the collapse of a welfare state. A divided republic cannot stand

I wonder if they will be baffled about the death of the shining cities they saw themselves commanding when they started their war on humanity and freedom, but then again they wont win.

They aren't mutually exclusive. But religions and ideologies such as communism certainly do compete with nationalism as focuses for allegience. I'm sure lots of Iranians love their country but I doubt that national identity is anywhere near as important to them as their affiliation with Shia Islam. As for North Koreans, if they were ethnonationalists they would be looking to reunite with the South and build a greater Korean nation. Instead they are devoted to the Dear Leader and his ideology.
in the modern world nationalism correlates with nations that lag behind their less nationalistic counterparts in almost every metric of human accomplishment and achievement. That correlation is not an accident.
This is the thing that really sticks in the craws of liberal globalists about Japan. How dare the Japanese do so well while being so backwardly closed, sexist, racist and nationalistic? How dare they build a thriving, accomplished modern society while ignoring all the things that we just know are necessary to do that?
Why do we want to west to be saved? we are the genius behind the last 500 years, we have taken man from walking to car, from candles to light bubs, from letters to cell phones and emails, from swords and crude hand cannons to pistol and rifles, for the ripe old age of 40 to 86, from earth to the moon...I am sorry you can understand how exceptional the west and America is.

No, definately not. Although they are very interested in foreign cultures and often eagar to talk with foreigners. And Japan does admit immigrants in the tens of thousads per year.
