As Wal-Mart threatens to walk, what’s next for a dying shopping center? - The Washington Post

Excellent article detailing what hope WM jobs offer in many urban areas.

So Walmarts issue is they would rather pay their workers a low wage so that they still need government assistance even when they are working 40 hours a week?

WM's issue is an arbitrary, capricious law passed AFTER approving their stores is bait and switch. They are correct, and I hope they build the stores in the nearest town, and hire no DC residents.

Perhaps the malls strip club can be the highest thing the residents aspire to.

I can't see $12.50 being a living wage in D.C. Even in my small town it's pretty tight.

Walmart would have created 1800 Jobs in poor DC neighborhoods and hired locals as much as possible. Gone. Better to have no job than one that pays the prevailing wage for the skill.

Walmart would have offered these impoverished neighborhoods cheaper products with far more convenience as many of these people travel to better areas to shop. Gone. Better to not siphon off business from affluent areas and make people travel further...more carbon emissions.

It's not like the neighboring businesses of the sites are struggling and got politicians to invite Walmart in...oh wait that happened.

But hey, we got to kick the bogeyman again!

Wal-mart doesn't care.
It's business plan is to take as much as it can from the government and line its own pockets.
$17B in PROFITS last year.

Which is only a tad >3% revenue. They need to increase profits. Even in retail, 3% is terribly low.

They need to provide a living wage and not use the government teat to save their bottom line.
Why am I paying for their employee's health care and food stamps?

Walmart's business plan is to make money - gasp - no wonder they are successful!

#1 If the government is offering them money to build a location, why not take it?

That isn't what happened in DC...Walmart made donations to the area to move in.

#2 The national average for profit margin fluctuates between 9 and 11 percent. Walmart's is 3.63%. Apple is hip with its 26.8% in profits. Walmart's 17.0 Billion in profits is nothing special considering the magnitude of their company and their expenses...Apple makes $42 Billion, but that is okay - they are sweet! Walmart employs more Americans than anyone except the government.

P.S. Walmart's profit is less than 17 Billion a year, because that does not reflect the $ Billions in dividends they pay out every year...If you are a public worker with a government pension or own a 401K...Walmart stock supports your retirement and their dividends are vital.

If a single mom of 2 kids has no special job skills she will be poor no matter what entry level job she gets anywhere. She is competing against teenagers.

Much of this "subsidies" to Walmart workers is nonsense. Counting semi-retired workers collecting SS, counting part time by choice, ignoring that Target is in the same boat, because they are cool - "tar-shay".
