The good news: In Gallup's latest poll, a record 87% of Americans approve of interracial marriage between blacks and whites, up from 4% in 1958. This issue has broad support among all races and regions of the country, even the south (83% support).

In U.S., 87% Approve of Black-White Marriage, vs. 4% in 1958

The not so great news: Since Gallup began polling the issue in 1968, there has always been a gap between the opinions of blacks and whites. In the first survey, 56% of blacks approved yet only 17% of whites said the same. Since then it has narrowed by a lot, but today the approval gap between blacks and whites is still 12 points (96% approval to 84% approval.)

I'd like to know what people think of this, especially the white conservatives on this forum who constantly argue that blacks are just as racist as whites.

This reminds me of this topic I brought up about the 2000 initiative in Alabama to legalize interracial marriage

You would think it would be less whites that support black and white marriage especially when black men are known to leave the women such as Obama's father left his white mother to only marry again and again.

I think you have to look at it this way--the support among whites went from 17% to 84%--a 67 point increase. African Americans didn't have to make up that much ground, and things are still changing in this country. That's all happened in my lifetime--I was a child during segregation. That's a huge step forward in the matter of a generation or two. I think most people aren't racist, or for some, at least not as racist as they used to be. That said, the folks that are have become increasingly vocal, so it seems like more people than it actually is. I think it's because they know the country is really changing, and it frightens them so they're lashing out loudly. The good news is that they'll die off eventually, and every generation gets more tolerant. That's a good thing.

black males are even more supportive...I don't believe in telling anyone who they can and cannot marry, but that doesn't mean I support it. I just don't support banning it.

My mother married a non-white man back in 1989. Shocking to see that 40% of the white people around her disapproved of her marriage. I never saw it.

Actually, according to the poll, only 40% of white people approved of interracial marriage at the time. So in 1989 a majority were still against it.

what's even more interesting is the big jump in support between 1995 and 1997. Any reason behind that?

Generation X coming of age maybe?

There has been a HUGE jump in support for gay marriage between 2008 and 2012 as Millennials have come of age.

As for interracial marriage, its hard to believe its 2013 and we still haven't moved completely beyond race as a society.

Could it be because black men desire white women more than black women?
