There are so many lines of evidence that race is still divisive in the United States despite our enormous strides in the direction of equality and tolerance since the 1950's. I will give just two: the reaction to the verdict in the Zimmerman case and my readings here on City-Data.
The reaction to the Zimmerman verdict for the overwhelming majority of American's was non existent to next to non existent. There are a very small number of people here on C.D. and many of them will say stupid things just to poke someone in the eye.
