Obrien is one of the brightest newscasters I have seen, she can hold her own with anyone and very well prepared.
There is no doubt she is bright and can sell herself. You have to be to be successful. She is also a bs artist who makes it about herself. She doesn't report on the news enough. Not as bad as a Chris Matthews but bad enough.
I have no problem with Al Jazeera. I do have a problem with Soledad and her racial-identity-for-profit nonsense.
I was shocked when Blacks didn't protest her being the host/face of the series called "Black in America". Also named "Journalist of the year" by the National Association of Black Journalists. Raised by wealthy Irish and Cuban parents in the millionaire yachting community of St James (Long Island), she and all 5 other siblings attended Harvard. Oh yeah...If anyone gets what it's like to really experience growing up Black in the United States it's Soledad
Better yet, she also saw her way onto the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, People En Espanol's list of more beautiful people and was named "Groundbreaking Latina of the Year" by Catalina magazine. Well never mind that she's never been to Cuba or bothered to learn Spanish despite her Mother being from Cuba.
I suppose just because you're not really Black or Latina doesn't mean you shouldn't cash in on the PC craze and run with it. I would too I guess.
Thanks for the info on her background. Now it makes sense how easy it comes for her to bullsh*t.
With her privileged background, I'm blacker than she is.

so basically, to be considered black by you, we would have to be dirt poor and high school drop outs. And to be Latino, you have have to speak Spanish and visit your native land.

That's not what I said at all. Do you think Soledad's experience typifies what it's like to be "Black in America"? The series itself sure wasn't about wealthy immigrants who're 1/32 Black or the rough streets of Harvard.
Also, to present yourself as an expert on Latino culture (which she does), yeah I think you should at least speak Spanish. Is that so unreasonable?

Plum stupidity. So now, you're in charge of defining what it is to be black or Latino? Great.

It just goes to show you how arrogant they are. They don't even know a single black person, but because they're white conservatives, they've decided to designate themselves as the definers of the black/Latino experience.
Worse...criticize her for not going to Cuba, but the minute she goes, they'll join the other right wing idiots by insisting that she broke the law and supports communism. Look at how they were crying when Jay Z and Beyonce went there.

Black in America was a documentary of other people's lives in America, not her own so what in the hell would it matter if SHE isnt your definition of black ?
She could have been white for all i care, the point was other's story, not her own. You didnt attack her for making the Muslim special now did you ?
And You think that being well off(better off) means you are immune from being black in America ? You are sadly mistaken. I was never dirt poor or grew up in the ghetto and i have still experienced plenty of the same problems other black people have gone through.
As for Latino culture, I have never once heard her call herself a expert in Latino Culture. She does speak Spanish by the way, just not fluently.
And the argument is reasonable is for you to decided, what you should be asking is if it is needed to know the Latino culture, and the answer is no.
Everyone from Cuba does not speak Spanish for one reason.
