CNN) -- More than 100,000 people are eager to make themselves at home on another planet. They've applied for a one-way trip to Mars, hoping to be chosen to spend the rest of their lives on uncharted territory, according to an organization planning the manned missions.
The Mars One project wants to colonize the red planet, beginning in 2022. There are financial and practical questions about this venture that haven't been clarified. Will there be enough money? Will people really be able to survive on Mars? But these haven't stopped some 30,000 Americans from signing up.

More than 100,000 want to go to Mars and not return, project says - CNN.com

Why did people come as explorers and early setters to this country, knowing they'd probably never return home again? It's all about wanderlust and adventure...and what an adventure Mars would be.

Ideally, a majority of those potential colonists will be liberals.

I would love the adventure myself, but Mars is really inhospitable and may are just caught in the romance of it. I think there are many humans who would jump at the chance to colonize other planets. The human spirit is an adventurous one!

I heard about this several days ago on the news. It's admirable that some people are willling to go, but it's also kinda scary in that they'd never see their friends/families in person again.

That said, someone above mentioned a good point: many early settlers came to this country (and to other countries in the new world) without knowing if they'd ever return to their native countries again or see their relatives again. And that's exactly what happened to many of those settlers: they never went back.

Hopefully they will also be the treehugger types that will resist trashing and polluting another planet as right wingers are apt to do. No responsible environmental stewardship mentality in that bunch.
