"A proposed amendment to the bylaws of the Alabama Republican Party would remove from the Party’s steering committee any member who publicly supports a position contrary to the most recent GOP platform, which was adopted during the 2012 Republican National Convention.
Party insiders say the proposed amendment was written as a direct result of comments made by current Alabama College Republicans Chairwoman Stephanie Petelos around the time the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. She encouraged her Facebook friends to “like” a page for a pro-gay marriage group called “Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry.” Petelos said she joined the group because she believes “all people deserve to be treated equally under the law.”
Some Party leaders reacted strongly to Petelos’ statements, moving to have her removed from the Party’s steering committee, a position she holds as a result of being elected chair of the Alabama College Republicans."
So much for the big tent. Walk in lockstep or be gone.
As a private organization, it's certainly within their right to do this, but it seems incredibly short-sighted on their part. Ms. Petelos was elected to this position by young college Republicans--the potential next generation of party leaders--and the Alabama GOP wants to silence her. Where does the GOP envision the party being in 20 years when all the old people are dead and gone?

They are getting pushed out. Many got the boot in 2010 and again in 2012. Look at the likes of Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jason Chavets, Mike Lee, and Trey Gowdy.
They are not old.
You think things happen overnight.
It takes the next election cycle to hold elected officials accountable. Or in this case, they could not wait to hold them accountable to the people that elected them.
I don't support gay marriage but I don't think people who do should be kicked out of the GOP. That's just wrong, it's just ONE issue out of several, and VERY few Republicans
actually support gay marriage to begin with.

Yeah, they're definitely reaching out to younger voters!
And when they get a pasting in 2014, it will be because voters are too stupid to appreciate them.
Yeah the youth of Alabama are demanding gay marriage. Why do libs think this entire country is debased as they happen to be?
