Labor Day is a day when people should be "off" (a.k.a day off/no work) - then how come most retail stores and malls are videly open in the United States? Most aren't even half day/reduced hours. This is ridiculous.

Yes, I know they are having "Labor Day or Back to school sale" and many people are shopping, but retail workers deserves a day off as well. We need to bring back blue laws or having statutory holidays where employees must be off by law on certain major holidays except emergency services.

My husband is in the computer software industry and does not work in any way with the public, and he had to work today.

Many doctors, nurses, Allied Health personnel, and other essential non-clinical health personnel, firefighters, and police officers worked today as well.

Are you kidding me? If I knew his boss/company CEO I would contact them immediately.

Some people want to work, I know that's a crazy thought but it happens.

Many people working in retail/consumer industry cannot afford to take an unpaid holiday off; many stores, especially small ones, do not offer paid holidays.

I don't think anybody wants to work unless very poor. How about giving paid holiday off for all employees?

Yes, I worked as well. I volunteered; nothing much going on today and we get paid extra for what is normally a very light day . . .

People have bills to pay. Working provides you money to pay your bills. Many people can't afford to take a day off.
