Yeah, militarily it's not even close to close.
Any response from Syria would likely be towards an US ally (ie Israel) or via asymetical warfare (ie terrorism) by either Syrian agents or their allies (ie Hezbollah) against "soft targets" in the area (ie US embassies or possibly a US military base in Turkey etc). A response of that type would be very likely if the US strikes at Syria.
The US naval forces themselves are pretty safe from Syria.
I recall that more bombs were dropped on Hanoi than any city in history yet hanoi didn't fall and the enemy won out in the end...Syria needs to see a real display of our overpowering might or it don't mean a thing. If not Syria may declare war ON US and then we will be forced to put boots on the ground.Syrian is not the primitive place that afghanistan and much of Iraq is. Their army can be much more than a nuisance to us.

With our lack of control over our borders, many Americans could be killed.
And that's different from the current situation (and the past decade or more) HOW?
The fact is there are plenty of folks out there who'd like to kill Americans on our home soil - and if it was so easy to get to Mexico, come across the border and successfully launch a terrorist strike here it would have already happened many many times, so CLEARLY it's not that easy to do all that.
Possible?
Sure.
Easy?
Obviously not.
