The only smart thing the U.S. can do at this point is to just stay out of business that isn't ours. We have enough problems here on the home front, so we should be focusing on those. Sure, what is happening with Syria is horrible, but it isn't our fight. And it is very evident that sometimes, when we try to help a country, we end up making things worse for both sides.

Thoughts?

I'm not a complete isolationist. I think we should have the most powerful military in the world, and I think that when we see abuse of power, like assads, we should say something.

But we shouldn't be maintaining defense for other countries, outside of a mutual defense pact. We shouldn't be invading countries without a un resolution and many other nations involved. We shouldn't be maintaining a military that is 4 times more powerful then the rest of the world combined.

This isn't the 18th century, no nation lives in isolation and in a global community, problems that arise beyond our physical borders do have national implications. To believe otherwise is naive.

Isolationism is foolish and blind.

Not being isolationists has nothing, really, to do with monkeying around where we have no clear interest or purpose. That is just plain arrogant foolishness.

True enough, but who elected America to be the World's Sheriff? Who is America to decide what is our place to intervene in a civil war? Who are we to pick sides? In the case of Syria when both sides not only hate us but are just about equally bad.
One can argue that by arming the rebels, supporting the rebels we actually contributed to the thousands of deaths.
We can chose who we do business with and who we don't. We should not be arming known bad guys.
The world has the UN.

Please give examples of valid monkeying around

Your argument sounds like the following: You see a bunch of kids on a playground, and one big guy is smashing the face in of another. You run over and intervene.

Another parent comes over and yells at you "What, you think you're the Sheriff or something? You are not a cop, how dare you get involved!"

As civilized human beings, we have an obligation to come to the aid of our fellow man, when we can and when there's a clear and obvious reason and desired outcome.

Syria is NOT one of those situations. The president has NO outcome in mind, and is NOT doing this to help the people.

Non-intervention, is way better then total isolation.

No need to go to extremes to prove a point.

Since you feel there are times its valid to interfere in the affairs of other nations, can you give a specific case or circumstance?
