[Update] Cops Mistakenly Shoot Two Female Bystanders In Times Square: Gothamist
Quote:
Police said one officer fired one shot, not striking the man. Then another officer who had responded fired two shots at the man, also not striking him. Instead, two pedestrians standing on the northeast corner of 8th Avenue and West 42nd Street were struck. A 54-year-old woman who uses a walker was struck in the lower right leg and rushed to Bellevue Hospital. A 35-year-old woman was grazed in her buttocks and was transported to Roosevelt Hospital

The lack of understanding of mental illness within the police department is just idiotic on the cops' side. Why were they shooting their guns off in Time Square to begin with? It seemed like a poor way to handle a situation like this and I am sure nothing will happen to the officers that made such poor judgement calls. Hopefully the two people they shot that had nothing to do with this will sue the city and win some money out of this due to stupid choices that were made.

Well he did take his metrocard out and point it at the cops

Maybe vision checks and threat assessment training are in order for our hero cops

Does anyone have the same response I do?

It's time to end the belief that the people are the enemy of law and government, and should be controlled by deadly force and threat. When did we forget that "public service" means what the name implies... that they serve us, not rule us, not control us. That they exist to suborn their interests, personally, and serve ours.

Did the cops shoot a black person? Is the cop white? We need to know these things before we can have a SWEEEEET racially charged thread here.

I mean, because a cop only turns into a dumbass prior to shooting a minority and whatnot as has been claimed in multiple other threads.

This is what happened in the west coast fugitive officer case, they got millions for the poor judgement of the officers and rightfully so.

Of course, if the victims were black and the officers white then of course it was racially motivated and not due to stupidity. Just saying....because I think all the BS of making everything racial actually makes it easier for discrimination to occur.

Well if these two cops have gotten the training and the subsequently required re-certification range time it would stand to reason that if they can do stupid chit; what might we expect from Joe Schlep who got some other form of certification training or even perhaps none at all?

You're not making your case here with this story.

I personally know two CCW's that got theirs by having an "in" with the local Sheriff with no training whatsoever. Yeah, they're both vets with previous weapons training from military in the 80's but........?

I am curious as to why cops fired on the man, Who was running around the intersection and had laid down in the road at one point. Times Square is one of the most crowded places in the country. Unless there was a gun in the mans hand opening fire would be a last resort. Nothing in the article stated this. Its fortune no one was killed in a city where gunfire in many places are the norm. Poor judgment or an object sighted that was mistook as a weapon are the only explanations until we get perhaps some more detail on this story. Definitely an explanation is in order if weapons were fired.
