Just so ya know regulation do not mean there is registration list maintained, it simply is a means of weeding out the crazies as much as possible.

Either do away with the old laws and write new laws which will be enforced, or start enforcing the laws that are already on the books.
Enforce the ones on the books and ensure that those same laws flag people such has him, anyone with a record of violations like he had should not be allowed to own one until they can prove to a court that they are trustworthy enough that society will not be put in danger.

Here's why gun owners resist new gun laws. They make a law today, there's another shooting tomorrow, and they want more laws. Wash-rinse-repeat. They want to take an inch today and a mile tomorrow. Hogwash you say?

Regulation for incredibly powerful tools of mass death seems like the only reasonable and sane choice for a functional modern society. On the other hand, BLACK SOCIALIST NAZI GOOBERMINT COMMIN TO TAKE MAH GUNS AND FINGER MAH WIFE YEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWWW. So its a very complicated debate.

Just because the IRS has rules doesn't mean that they would apply them unfairly either.

Indeed there are people who plainly should not be a part of the discussion.

That said this is the discussion we should be having, not how we should curtail the Constitutional Rights of the overwhelming vast majority that do not abuse those rights.
How is a background check trumping the majority of peoples rights. FYI rights can and are taken away for several reasons, such as being convicted of a felony, and a person deemed to be a danger to themselves or others would be no different. If you are not a convict or someone that a mental health professional has flaged as dangerous you have nothing to worry about.

I agree 100%. There should be flags in place to prevent someone like him from buying a gun legally.
Past arrests for firearm violations. Damn it, when you arrest someone for a gun violation prosecute the idiot.
Road rage.. You get arrested for a road rage incident that should send a flag up and maybe that individual should need to be cleared by a shrink. Really any arrest for violence should be a flag. If you can't control your temper the last thing you should be allowed to own is a gun.
Domestic violence.. Enforce the laws...
