Is this the part where we are supposed to ban all guns so nobody gets shot? We all know criminals will follow the law and will not get a gun.

Since deaths in some wars are estimates and exclude wounded and missing, the comparison is iffy.

For example, this site estimates a total of 1,309,000 war dead.

American War Deaths Through History

There is no way to derive a figure to the level of precision implied by "1,171,177". The largest number of deaths, in the Civil War, is estimated only to the nearest 1000, for example. So the comparison is on shaky grounds.

Yes, 1,384,171 firearms deaths are terrible, but how many of those were suicides, in which case a different means might have been used to the same effect? Ditto for family violence deaths. Someone who wants to kill a spouse could use poison, a knife, or a frying pan if a gun were not available.

It appears that in most states, and for the US as a whole, suicide is by far the largest percentage. See figure 4:

The article has a large amount of statistical information. Skimming it leaves me with the distinct impression that the best way to reduce firearm deaths is by improving mental health services.

I looked at those stats and they are really hard to get a final number. I wonder if anyone here could take a try. It starts on page 22

Kayekaye, you'll no doubt be very enlightened by these, and all the other easily found and read stats on the 'net.:

List of countries by intentional homicide rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Especially, note the relative percentages/rates per 100k of gun ownership versus the high rates of intentional murder and suicides in so many countries other than the US.

The obvious conclusion is that there is absolutely no relationship that would justify some Federal confiscation of all the Obama-list's specific firearms types. ID'd by model type, caliber, fanciful style cues, plastic stock maerials (versus the far more legitimate and socially acceptable wood stock.. ), or mag capacity. And so on, versus actual homicide or murder rates.

That bogus link is all assumed by the uneducated, but nonetheless uninformed voter cohort who is gaining on cogent thought with their endlessly biased confrontational approach.

OK...well then, may the best minds & arguments win, huh?

Why don't you just cut to the chase and tell us how many died of old age? As though there is any validity whatsoever to the comparison?

How many people have died from smoking related illness?
Stats are great like the ones that count the 17 year old gang banger shot dead in the stats as Children killed by handguns.

Our politicians and media should be more concerned with the daily gun deaths in the inner cities than the random acts such as we saw last week in Washington.
America was founded by great people with a dream in their hearts and a gun in their hand. You cannot take the gun away or the criminals will find a way. Their way will be bombs like the ones that go off everyday in the Middle East.
