It seems that when Americans talk about those things they have a hard time distinguish between those. Why is that?
They also seem to generalize that Europe and Canada are Socialists.
Without really knowing what Socialism means. To a certain extent America always has been a little Socialist as well, so they cannot say that America always has been pure Capitalistic.
Sometimes it seems that America just despises poor people and worship the Rich.
Using these terms interchangeably isn't misinformation, it's disinformation. It is in the interests of the controlling corporate class to insure that Americans remain comfortably numb. It begins with the creation of "buzz" words (communism, Marxism, socialism, "Obamacare", atheism, etc.). These words are defined so as to elicit fears that our way of life, our liberty, and our morals are at risk. The next step is to connect these words to one another; not by rational definition, but by emotional reaction to the fear they've now engendered. Lastly, equate any criticism of unethical capitalistic practices, with support of one of these now-fearful concepts.
A dumb and frightened populace is much easier to manipulate!

Read through this whole thread and you'll see that's the truth! Back to your observation though, people mix this stuff up because they've not learned enough about any of it to be able to distinguish between them.
Because we're ignorant, stupid, and easily manipulated.
I try not to be part of that list.
I think some people wonder why I bother. Its enough that someone in a future generation doesn't take a wiz on my grave because they know it wasn't me that failed them.
Americans also define liberal as someone who worships big government when the classical meaning of the term is someone who favors limited government. The socialists and fascists stole the term.
No poor person ever hired me.
What Americans have worshipped in the past, more than other nations, is the concept of individual liberty and the understanding that with liberty comes responsibility.
Because all three are just insults hurled mindlessly by the right. Like pinko, wacko, moonbat, *******, feminazi,etc.
