That's right. Virginians vote in two weeks for a new Governor - and a "carpetbagger" Democrat has opened a double digit lead over his Tea Party opponent.

It's not so much that the Democrats won this one...it's that they've drawn the Tea Party's teeth when the Debt Ceiling comes up again in a couple months. Even if Boehner hangs on to his Speakership -- and Brutus Cantor can't wait for the day when he loses it -- they have lost all their leverage.

Which means we won't be heading to the brink of default again, calming the international markets and giving us some confidence that our country won't face this kind of gridlock again at least until after the 2014 elections. The GOP only has that long to repair their brand after going toe-to-toe with Obama ruined their numbers. They won't risk another bout.

Debt and default - two different animals.

Any default would be a choice (independent of the debt ceiling) not to pay our bills - which makes this whole shutdown a case of blackmail and political warfare. But the Republicans asked for it... and walked right into it.
